In Yunnan Province, five distinct types of residential timber structures are identified. The seismic resistance capabilities of these structures vary significantly due to factors such as traditional construction methods, local weather conditions, and economic constraints. Based on extensive investigations and historical seismic damage data, this article presents a comprehensive analysis of the distribution and architectural characteristics of timber structures in Yunnan. The seismic damage patterns for each type of structure are summarized, and detailed analyses of historical earthquake damage data reveal that the economic losses associated with damaged timber structures constitute a substantial proportion of the total residential housing losses in Yunnan earthquakes. The findings indicate that the existing timber structures in Yunnan no longer meet the current seismic fortification requirements. Non-load-bearing components are particularly susceptible to damage during seismic events, and the timber frames themselves struggle to withstand significant seismic forces.
